George E. Baur, 83, of Highland, died Wednesday morning, January 20, 2010, at Hiawatha Community Hospital where he had been admitted a day earlier.

Mr. Baur retired from the Santa Fe Trail Transportation Company having served in managerial positions at St. Joseph, Missouri, Topeka, Kansas, Joplin, Missouri, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Omaha, Nebraska.

He was born October 9, 1926, at St. Joseph, Missouri, one of five children of Joe and Iva Quimby Baur. He attended schools, Gard Business University, and Hillyard College, all of St. Joseph, Missouri, and the American School of Law of Chicago, IL.

Mr. Baur served in the US Navy during WW II in the South Pacific and received four Bronze Stars.

He was a charter member of Delta Nu Alpha St., King Hill Lodge #376 AF&AM, both of St. Joseph. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason at Omaha. He was a member of AARP; VFW Post #5531 of Wathena; life member of Omaha Transportation Club of Omaha; and life member of American Legion Post #154, of White Cloud. He was a member of First Christian Church of St. Joseph.

George was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Carleen in 1995; his parents; and a sister Dorothy Hubbard in 1996.

He is survived by two sisters Janet Guardado of St. Joseph, Margie Snyder of San Diego, CA; a brother Ray J. Baur of Long Beach, CA; and a number of nieces and nephews.
