Earl was born October 19, 1919, the son of a German immigrant father, and a second generation American mother in Lorraine, Kansas, where he grew up on a farm. He graduated from Ottawa University at Ottawa, Kansas, attended Navy Mid-shipmen's school at the University of Notre Dame near South Bend, Indiana, and became a naval officer during World War II. Earl served on two troop ships and on a hospital ship in both the European and Pacific oceans and earned a number of area ribbons and battle stars. During his military service, Earl married Marvel Schroeder from his home church in Lorraine, Kansas, and she went with him to Oregon and California and was waiting in Long Beach, California when he returned from overseas.

Earl later attended the University of California and then earned a doctorate at Arizona State University and became on educator. He was a teacher, an elementary school principal, a high school principal, and a community college Dean of Instruction. As a side interest, Earl was a real estate investor. His generosity from those successful investments determined the location of Dayspring Methodist Church and created security for the family. Earl was active in his community as a Kiwanian, in his church choir, on the administration's board, and a founding president and a longtime board member of the Dayspring church foundation. He served his alma mater, Ottawa University, on the Executive committee of the Board of Trustees. He and Marvel did voluntary visitation at Good Samaritan Hospital and attended numerous elder hostels. Earl cared deeply for his family and friends and served humanity in many ways. Earl Schlick is survived by his wife Marvel, son Daryl (Barbara), Daughter Karen, son Steven (Barb), son Mark (Kim), and many friends.
