"Formerly of Walden, N.Y., John Henry Whitmarsh, Jr., a 30-year resident of Hyde Park and retired tool and dye maker for Standard Gage in Poughkeepsie for 35 years, died Monday June 27, 2005 in Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, N.Y. He was 85. He has now joined his wife, and will be missed by family and friends.

Son of John H. Whitmarsh, Sr. and Emelia Dinges, he was born May 8, 1920 in Newburgh, N.Y. He married Gloria Jean Whitmarsh on January 16, 1972 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She predeceased him on October 31, 2004.

Retiring from Standard Gage in 1985, he previously served in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal and Philippines Liberation Ribbon. He also served in the U.S. Air Force from 1947 to 1949. He was an avid bowler.

He was one of four children, and is survived by two sons, Brian E. Whitmarsh and his wife, Alysia, of Saugerties, and their son, Aidan; and John H. Whitmarsh III of Connecticut, and his children, John H. IV and Jennifer.
